When starting with modeling finally becomes easy

 

For years, I’ve seen the same thing happen in testing teams. People see all the benefits of modeling, they know that modeling helps. It makes behaviour visible, it shows where assumptions hide and it often leads to better discussions. But still, many testers don’t start modeling. Not because they don’t understand the system or don’t believe in its advantages, but because the first step simply feels too big. An empty diagram is uncomfortable. Drawing a model, or opening a modeling tool, feels like something extra. And somewhere the thought appears: “What if my model is wrong?”

But here is the twist. A model cannot be wrong. A model is just a picture of how you currently understand the behaviour. Nothing more. It’s not truth, it’s not a final statement. It’s your view at that moment. And exactly because it is only that, it helps you learn. A model that doesn’t match reality is not a failure, it’s a discovery.

And it also reminds us of something important in testing: we as testers cannot “ensure quality”, because quality is always a value for someone in a specific context. What we can do is make behaviour visible, so that people can judge that value better. And modeling is one of the simplest ways to make that behaviour visible. It gives people something concrete to look at, so they can judge what quality means in their context.

Despite all the advantages of modeling, many testers still never start. Not because they don’t want to, but because the start feels too heavy. That moment is gone now.
